Current Infrastructure

The Challenge

The Housing & Urban Planning Department is one of the leading Government real-estate and construction organizations. As they have tenders opened day-by-day for their new sites and a lot of visitors come over the website and fill up the tender online, download the forms, pay the money, file the complaints, make the withdrawal request, and the much more public activity performed. The traffic is just uncertain and cannot guess by anyone, that how many visitors will be there over the website. This is the challenge where they cannot decide the infrastructure to be implemented as there is no upfront demand by the websites to run seamlessly but yes sometimes it goes too much high consumption of resources and in that case, they are helpless in handling this kind of situation. This client needs serious help in optimization in their infra where cost is not an issue if performance will be as per expectation. This mindset is a plus point for us as we don't have cost as a bar while suggestin g the best services of AWS for this client. Being a government organization, they have the strict guidelines to choose the government IT organization as a service provider, but they are in such pain which forced them to take the out of box decision and choose some capable and experienced consulting partner to get help and resolve this kind of technical hurdle and manage the seamless performance in all aspects. Apart from the above said challenges they also have major concerns related to the security of such critical infrastructure. As they are not following the government guidelines so they are fearing about the security as if there will be some breaches then Government will take serious action against the decision-maker.


Considering the customer's requirements for running scalable, fault tolerant website, i2k2 proposed the solution architecture which included configuring their Website to EC2, database on RDS in Load balancing infrastructure and integrated along with other managed AWS services. Key features of the solutions are.

  • Complete architecture has been configured in AWS (Mumbai) Region.
  • To meet the needs for HA, scalability, and development agility, i2k2 suggested UPBOCW to have its website on AWS.
  • For the application servers we have configured IIS Web server on EC2 with Windows Servers in private subnets.
  • Auto Scaling for web servers enables to scale its EC2 capacity automatically depending on predefined conditions.
  • For Database, MSSQL Standard Edition has been configured on RDS servers with high availability.
  • For the load balancing the redundant infra proposed in other AZ
  • OpenVPN has been configured on Windows EC2 instances for secure connectivity to UPBOCW
  • As other services SNS for Notification, Cloudwatch for monitoring, Cloudtrail for logs, Secret Manager for Password/Keys protection, KMS for Key management, GuardDuty & Standard Shield to enhance protection, Trusted advisor for security assessment and suggestions are deployed.


  • 1. AWS WAF is provided to protect apps and APIs against bots and exploits that consume resources, skew metrics, or cause downtime
  • 2. AWS GuardDuty is deployed for threat detection and it also continuously monitor the infra to detect any kind of malicious activity
  • 3. AWS Standard Shield is also provided to protect from the DDOS attack and safeguard the applications running on the AWS infra
  • 4. Important instances are kept in the private subnet and user access can be provided by using VPN
  • 5. AWS Security Hub is deployed here for security posture management service that automates best practice checks, aggregates alerts and supports automated remediation.
  • 6. To ensure the AWS best practices we have also deployed the AWS Trusted Advisor
  • 7. Access Management and Security of Keys achieved using the KMS and Secret Manager
  • 8. MFA is also implemented to provide an extra layer of authentication.


  • 1. A multi-AZ infrastructure has been architected for this customer
  • 2. Snapshots are being taken properly with a defined frequency and kept within S3, as-per-required retention period
